8 Ways to Learn About Art for All Ages

8 Ways to Learn About Art for All Ages

by Kerry Cordy

If you are looking for ways to learn about art or are working on your Art Badge through either the Frontier Girls or Quest Program or just looking to learn a little more about art itself, here are 8 great resources and ideas.

The Badge of the Week for March 15-21, 2020 was the Art Badge. – Daily posts for Badge of the Week are posted on the Quest Clubs Facebook page and consolidated here for easy reference.  Full requirements for earning the Art Badge can be found on the Quest Clubs website.

1. Symmetry

Start by learning about symmetry by using WeaveSilk.  This beautiful website allows you create gorgeous, colorful, completely symmetrical pieces of art and I have to  admit I am addicted to it.  I could spend hours making beautiful designs and it is super easy to save the images and share them with friends.  There is even an app for your phone, though I have not yet tried it.

Take it offline and create your own symmetrical designs by folding a piece of paper in half, then open it and squirt small dots of paint on one side only. Close the paper and and smooth with your fingers and then reopen to discover what you created! Let your painting dry and use markers to add details if you wish.

2. Mood

How can color and value change the mood of a piece of art? Look at a variety of works from various artists throughout time. What moods do they convey? Check out Google’s Art and Culturepage to view a variety of different paintings such as the calming colors and brush strokes of Monet’s Water Lilies.

Activity: Create a drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, or other artwork. What mood does the work communicate? How do the colors and value communicate this mood? Redo the same work using different colors and values. How does the mood change? Visit https://kinderart.com/art-lessons/painting/emotion/for a complete lesson plan on teaching emotion in art that can be adapted for all age levels.

3. Elements of art; line, color, space, form, shape, texture, value

Create your own art pieces with each one focusing on a different element. Try using a variety of mediums such as paint, pens, crayons, or clay.

KinderArt has a fun activity that can be adapted for all ages using both line and color. https://kinderart.com/art-lesso…/drawing/lines-of-all-kinds/

5. Different Media and Different Styles

One of the art badge requirements is to choose a subject (pine trees, poodles or daisies for example) and make two pieces of art of your choice in either two different media or two different styles. You can also get inspired with this video collaboration of 6 different artists who worked on a piece together. Some used colored pencils, others chose pens, but together they created an amazing piece of art. (Keep in mind this is Youtube video so there will be ads?)

Try doing something similar with your friends. Choose a subject matter such the hand used in the video and create a piece of art of your choice then mail it to a friend and have them add to it. Try several friends and see how each person’s style is different and what medium they choose for their portion.

6.  Famous Artists

You can’t learn about art without learning about some of the most famous artists throughout history. Check out this site for basic information on one hundred different artists.
