A Note From the Founder – Leader Appreciation Day Feb. 20

Kerry Cordy – Founder

Every year on Feb. 20 we honor those of you who volunteer your time to lead a troop or club. Without you, this program would not exist. Feburary 20th was chosen as Leader Appreciation Day as it was my mother’s birthday and her dedication and success as my Girl Scout leader growing up is why I started Frontier Girls and Quest Clubs. These programs are a blend of my passion for scouting and my passion for homeschooling.

I want to take a moment to express my deepest appreciation to all the troop and club leaders who dedicate their time, energy, and passion to guiding the next generation. Your hard work does not go unnoticedā€”from planning meetings and organizing events to mentoring kids (and adults!) and leading by example, you are the heart of our program. The countless hours you invest in teaching new ideas, valuable skills, and encouraging personal growth make a lasting impact on each participant in your group. Thank you for all that you do to shape future leaders and build a stronger, more compassionate community.

So if you are part of a troop or club, show your leader how much you appreciate them this month!

Random Acts of Kindess Day – Feb. 17

February 17th is Random Acts of Kindness Day, making it the perfect opportunity to work toward earning your Kindness badge! Simple gestures can make a big impactā€”try writing encouraging notes and leaving them in library books, paying for someoneā€™s coffee, or surprising a neighbor with homemade treats. Get creative by organizing a kindness scavenger hunt with friends or family, challenging each other to complete thoughtful deeds throughout the day. You can also volunteer at a local shelter, donate items to a food pantry, or simply brighten someone’s day with a heartfelt compliment. Remember, kindness doesn’t have to be grand to be meaningful; even the smallest acts can make the world a better place.

Kindness Chain Reaction Game

Begin with a discussion on what kindness means and why itā€™s important in our daily lives. Ask participants to share examples of kind things they have done or experienced. Explain that in this activity, they will create a ā€œKindness Chainā€ by writing down kind actions and completing them together to build a paper chain.

Materials Needed:

  • Strips of colorful paper (cut to about 1 inch wide and 6 inches long)
  • Markers or pens
  • Tape
  • A small container or basket (optional, for drawing kindness ideas)

2. Activity Instructions (20 minutes)

  • Step 1: Give each participant one or more strips of paper.
  • Step 2: Have them write different acts of kindness on each strip (e.g., “Give someone a compliment,” “Hold the door open,” “Say thank you”, “Share supplies”, “Offer to help”). Make them actions that can be completed while in your meeting room.
  • Step 3: Once everyone has written their ideas, gather the strips and mix them in a basket or pile.
  • Step 4: One by one, participants pick a strip and perform the act of kindness written on it.
  • Step 5: After completing the act, they will use tape to connect their strip to create a kindness paper chain.

Once the chain is complete, discuss how small acts of kindness can build up and create a positive impact in the community. Display the kindness chain as a reminder of their efforts and to encourage them to continue adding to it at home or school. You can even keep a basket of blank strips of paper so that kids can write down acts of kindness they have done since your last meeting and add them to the chain.

February is American Heart Month!

February is American Heart Month, a great time to focus on keeping your heart healthy and earning your Heart Health badge. Start by learning about heart-healthy foods and trying new recipes packed with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Challenge yourself to stay active by walking, dancing, or playing games like tag or jump rope every day. Explore how the heart works by creating a fun model or tracking your heart rate during different activities. You can also learn the basics of CPR or research ways to reduce stress through mindfulness and relaxation techniques. Whether you make small changes to your daily routine or take on a big fitness challenge, every step you take helps support a stronger, healthier heart!

Heart Beat Freeze Dance

Learn how movement affects heart rate while having fun dancing. Select a range of music from a very slow tempo to a very fast tempo. Randomly select a song and have the kids dance to it for 30 seconds. Then turn off the music and have them “freeze” in place and put their hand over their heart. How fast it is beating? Have them describe it. Is it fast? slow? strong? Switch to a new song and repeat. Try playing a very slow song right after a very fast song and then speed it up again. Then discuss how exercise increases heart rate and helps to strengthen the heart.

Last Chance to Participate in SWAPS 2025!

Want to get to know other members around the country through a unique penpal opportunity? Register for our annual SWAPS event now! SWAP partners will be distributed on Feb. 7 so you only have one more week to register if you wish to participate.

Not sure what SWAPS are? SWAPS are small craft items attached to a safety pin that you trade with other members across the country along with a letter telling them about your family or group. You can pin your SWAPS to a hat, banner, bulletin board, tote bag, etc. and collect new ones each year as you meet new friends from around the country. Those who participate in the SWAPS event can also get a free 2025 SWAPS pin from me commemorating the event if they mail me one of their SWAPS.

When you register you will put down how many SWAPS participants are in your group that will need a SWAP pin. I try to match groups and families with similar size groups or families whenever possible, but I cannot guarantee it. You will also put down how many SWAPS partners you want. This means how many groups or families you wish to trade with, not how many individuals. You are guaranteed at least one partner, more than that depends on the number of groups and families participating.

All SWAPS need to be mailed to their assigned partner(s) by the end of February to arrive as close to March 4 as possible. Why March 4? Because March 4th is our annual program holiday where we “March Forth” and tell everyone about Frontier Girls, Quest Clubs or Curiosity Untamed. It is a day many troops and clubs celebrate getting know others in the program as well.
