January 2025 Newsletter

Kerry Cordy

A Note From the Founder – Happy 18th Birthday!

Kerry Cordy – Founder

January 19 marks the 18th Birthday of Frontier Girls, the foundation of all of our badge programs. On that date in 2007 is when I officially started my business. For those that don’t know our history, I am a Gold Award Girl Scout and have always loved earning badges. As the Girl Scout program changed over the years though it was no longer a good fit for my family and so I decided to start my own program.

I soon had a problem though. People loved the Frontier Girls program, but for many families it was not a good fit. They had boys and Frontier Girls is a girls only program. They were atheist and Frontier Girls requires a belief in God. So, in 2010, I added Quest Clubs. I allowed families to use my badges to create a scouting style program that aligned with their specific goals and beliefs.

By 2013, the homeschool community realized that our badges made the perfect roadmap for unit studies on just about everything and we started earning awards as homeschool curriculum (see our latest award farther down in the newsletter.)

Then 2020 hit and the pandemic wiped out about 75% of all of our troops and clubs as no one could meet for roughly 2 years. To stay in business, I launched Curiosity Untamed and started to market directly to homeschoolers. Thankfully they saved the day!

In 2022, I decided to merge the three programs onto a single website as many families use all three programs. They have daughters in a Frontier Girls troop, sons in a Quest Club and they use the badges for homeschool as well. While the merge made sense for those members and for myself (who now only has to keep one website up to date instead of three), I know it has made it a bit more confusing for new members to sort out the differences.

So, if you are new to the group and have questions about how all this works, please reach out and email or call me. I am always happy to help you get the most out of your membership.

Community Service Highlight – Frontier Pioneers of Lebanon, OR

This year The Frontier Pioneers of Lebanon, Oregon helped a local non-profit book advent program in their area. The program provides families with 24 books, one for each day of advent. After last minute sign-ups, the program ended up fulfilling the advent wishes of 31 families for a total of 744 books! The Frontier Pioneers spent time wrapping books and helping deliver them to the families during the holiday season. The holiday book program has been running for many years and the program was more than grateful to get help from this amazing crew of pioneers this year.

Continuing Education Scholarships for Frontier Girls Members

The Frontier Girls program offers three annual continuing education scholarships to girls ages 16-22.

These scholarships are not traditional college scholarships and can be used for any type of continuing education including college tuition, vocational schools, special classes or seminars, educational equipment (computers, cameras, etc.) or even travel.  Our goal is to encourage girls to continue to learn new things and explore the world around them even if it is not within a traditional school system.

The deadline for applying is April 1, 2025

Annual SWAPS Event – Registration Ends Jan. 31

Every year we encourage members from around the country to get to know each other by making and trading SWAPS through the mail.  Think of it sort like a pen-pal program but with added bonus of sending and receiving a physical memento. SWAPS  are small handmade craft items that can be pinned for display somewhere on a jacket, a backpack, a sash, or a hat and is a perfect way for kids to meet each other, learn about new places and promote friendship. Each SWAP item represents a place, a special event or a person and stands for “Souvenir With A Purpose”. All SWAPS should have a safety pin on the item to attach it to a display.

If you are looking for craft ideas for your SWAP, search Pinterest or Google for “SWAPS Girl Scouts” and then click on images. SWAPS should represent the sender in some fashion and it is traditional to send a letter to your SWAP partner telling them about yourself,,where you live and how your SWAP represents you.

Rules for participating:

  1. Have a current paid membership to Curiosity Untamed. (Includes Frontier Girls and Quest Clubs memberships)
  2. Fill out the registration form and submit it no later than January 31, 2025
  3. SWAPS partners will be assigned by February 10, 2025 via email. CHECK YOUR EMAIL!!!
  4. Contact your SWAPS partner no later than February 14 to verify shipping address and number of participants.
  5. Make enough SWAPS for each member of your partner group/family to receive one.
  6. Write a letter to include with your SWAPS introducing your group/family and explaining why the SWAP represents you.
  7. Ship your SWAPS no later than March 1, 2025

PLEASE do not register to participate unless you plan to follow through. Every year we have disappointed kids who make and ship SWAPS, but never receive any in return. At the end of the event I try to match up any participants who did not receive anything and give them a chance to try to SWAP with another family/group. Participation is at your own risk. If you sign up for SWAPS and fail to send your SWAPS without notifying us with a good reason, you will be banned from participating in the future.
