A Note from the FounderCelebrating Freedom 250

On July 4, 2026, the United States celebrates its 250th birthday. That’s an incredible milestone, and one that deserves more than fireworks and hamburgers. It’s an opportunity to stop and reflect on the people, sacrifices, ideas, and freedoms that shaped our nation over the last two and a half centuries.

To help families and groups celebrate in a meaningful, hands-on way, we created the new Freedom 250 Badge along with a complete Freedom 250 Unit Study filled with activities, history projects, crafts, games, and discussions designed for all ages.

We also put together complete plans for hosting your own Freedom 250 party. Whether you’re organizing a troop gathering, homeschool event, neighborhood celebration, or family activity day, the guide includes themed decorations, hands-on activities, patriotic games, food ideas, and service projects that help kids connect with history in a memorable way.

One of the things I’ve always believed is that history matters more when kids experience it instead of just reading about it. Freedom 250 gives us a chance to celebrate our country while also talking about citizenship, community, responsibility, and the freedoms we often take for granted.

I hope your family or group takes time this July to celebrate not just America’s birthday, but the values and opportunities that come with living in a free nation.

Freedom 250 Unit Study and Meeting Plan

As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, this is a great opportunity to help kids better understand freedom, citizenship, and the history of our nation. Our new Freedom 250 Unit Study was designed to make those topics hands-on, practical, and engaging for a wide range of ages.

Participants will explore American symbols, the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, civic responsibility, and important moments in American history through activities like games, timelines, service projects, crafts, discussions, and creative challenges. I especially wanted this unit study to include interactive activities that get kids moving and working together instead of simply reading from a worksheet.

The Freedom 250 Unit Study works well for homeschool families, troops, clubs, patriotic events, or summer activities leading up to July 4, 2026. It is flexible enough for younger children while still giving older participants meaningful topics to explore.

Leadership Position Spotlight

Reporter

The Reporter helps share what your group is doing. This may include writing short summaries of meetings, taking notes on activities, or keeping a troop scrapbook. The reporter can also write newsletters or social media (with permission) or submit photos and stories to the local newspaper..

This role builds communication skills and helps members reflect on what they’ve learned. It’s a great fit for kids who enjoy writing, storytelling, or organizing information.

Like all our leadership positions, this position is represented by a puzzle piece because they are an essential piece of any troop or club.

Higher Award Highlight

Discovery Award

The Discovery Award encourages members to explore all nine Areas of Discovery by earning at least one badge in each. It’s a simple but powerful way to make sure learning stays well-rounded.

Summer is a great time to fill in any missing areas. Let members choose one category they haven’t explored yet and complete a badge just for fun.

Tips & Tricks for Troop & Club Leaders

Simplify Summer Meetings

If your group meets during the summer, shorten your meetings and focus on one main activity instead of trying to cover multiple requirements. Keep it light, flexible, and fun.

Summer is not the time for overplanning. It’s the time to keep kids engaged and coming back.
