Introduction:

“The land is overrun with monsters born from excuses, delays, and broken promises. They grow stronger every time someone says, ‘later,’ or forgets what they said they’d do. But you are the heroes who can stop them! Create your character, take on real-life quests, and earn power with every task you finish. Each monster you defeat brings you closer to the final challenge—the mighty three-headed Accountability Dragon. Only with courage, honesty, and persistence will you have the strength to win. Your adventure begins now!”

Create a Character

Every adventure needs a hero and each child gets to create their own. This character becomes their stand-in for the journey, growing stronger and earning new titles as they complete tasks, battle monsters, and work their way toward the final showdown. Have your child:

  1. Draw their character (knight, wizard, explorer, even a dragon).
  2. Give them a Name and a Title (e.g., “The Beginner,” “The Brave,” or “Keeper of Checklists”).
  3. Start them at Level 1.
  4. Track three stats as they complete quest tasks:
    • 💪 Strength – physical tasks (cleaning, exercise, chores)
    • 🧠 Wisdom – schoolwork, reading, thoughtful actions
    • 💖 Kindness – helpful deeds, honesty, keeping promises
  5. Track their health. For each uncompleted task per day, your character will lose one health slot. Draw an X inside a health box. If all boxes are X’ed out and they reach zero, they are knocked unconscious. In order to continue to play, you must purchase more health using your gold on hand. The cost is 1 gold for 1 health point. If you do not have enough gold to regain some health, you may negotiate with The Gatekeeper of Second Chances (the parent) to go on a side quest or two to earn some extra gold.
  6. Track defeated monsters. Each time you defeat a monster, add it to your defeated monster list to build your battle resume!

At the end of each day or week, update their character sheet with new levels, remaining stat points, and gold. Make sure to use pencil so that you can erase as you change the information.

TIP: If you have a laminator, laminate the character page and use a dry erase marker as it will make record keeping easier.

Sidekicks

Sidekicks are pets or friends that help you stay accountable. Choose your first sidekick when you hit Level 5, a second sidekick when you reach Level 10, and a third when you hit Level 15. You may only take one side kick with you on a Quest at a time, so if you have more than one you will need to choose which to use. You can place the sidekick helping you in the sidekick section of the Character Sheet. Remaining side kicks can be stored in your satchel with your reward cards.

Quest Logs

Everyday tasks may feel ordinary on their own—washing dishes, finishing homework, or helping a sibling—but in this game, each one is part of a greater quest. Every time a child completes a task, they aren’t just checking off a chore—they’re striking a blow against a monster, earning gold for their hero, and gathering XP to grow stronger. Bit by bit, these small victories add up, turning daily responsibilities into steps along an epic adventure that leads all the way to the Accountability Dragon.

Work with your child to choose 3–5 daily tasks for their Quest Log. These are simple, real-life goals like:

  • Finish schoolwork
  • Help clean up after meals
  • Practice an instrument
  • Play nicely with a sibling
  • Take care of a pet

For each task, assign it a stat category and value. If some tasks are more difficult or time consuming than others, you may also assign more than one stat point to that task. For example a small task like playing nicely with a sibling might be worth +1 Kindness, while finishing homework might be worth +2 Wisdom. You can also assign more than one stat to a task. For example taking the dog for a walk might gain you +1 Kindess and +1 Strength.

Each completed task earns:

  • 1 XP (experience point)
  • 💰 1 gold
  • A stat point in Strength, Wisdom, or Kindness (depending on the task type) Each stat point deals one point of damage to a monster (two if it matches their weakness)

Level Up With XP (Experience Points)

Leveling up is where the adventure really comes to life. As kids complete their daily quests, they collect XP (experience points) that help their character grow stronger. Every 10 XP equals a new level, and with each level comes exciting upgrades—new titles, bonus side-quests, and access to tougher monsters. It’s a simple way to show that small, consistent efforts lead to big progress over time.

Gold and Bonus Loot

As gold is accumulated, it may be spent on whatever rewards the parent has set up. Bonus Loot can be earned when leveling up to certain levels, or may be handed out by the parent as a reward when the child shows extra accountability.

Sample rewards might be things like:

Accountability Quest Reward Shop

  1. Stay up 30 minutes past bedtime – 8 gold
  2. 15 extra minutes of screen time – 10 gold
  3. Pick what’s for dinner one night – 15 gold
  4. Choose the family game or movie – 10 gold
  5. Skip one small chore – 6 gold
  6. Have a special snack or treat – 7 gold
  7. Trade gold for a small toy, sticker, or collectible – 20 gold
  8. Choose the music in the car for a day – 5 gold
  9. Read an extra chapter – 4 gold
  10. Get a one-on-one “date” with Mom or Dad – 25 gold

The rewards should have meaning within your family and the amount of gold needed to earn them should reflect the amount of effort involved.

Battle Monsters

Once your child has created their character and started earning XP, it’s time to face the monsters that stand in their way. Each creature represents a real-life challenge—like procrastination, distractions, or broken promises—and has its own story, HP (hit points), and special weakness. Kids defeat these monsters by completing their daily tasks, dealing damage point by point until the monster is conquered. Battling monsters turns ordinary responsibilities into exciting adventures, where every finished chore or assignment brings them one step closer to victory.

  • Pick a Monster Card. Start with Tier 1 (15–20 HP) for quick wins. Let them choose from higher tiers as their Level allows.
  • On the first day of the battle, if the character has stat points remaining on their character sheet, they may have the first attack and use those points to immediately do damage to the monster. If they do not have remaining stat points, then the moster will attack first based on the undone tasks on the first day of battle.
  • At the end of each day or week tally the total number of stat points earned as well as the total number of tasks undone on the Quest Log.
  • Each stat point earned deals +1 damage to the monster.
  • If the monster’s weakness matches the stat point, double the damage.
    • Example: Finishing homework (+2 Wisdom) against a monster weak to Wisdom = 4 damage.
  • If there are any unfinished tasks, the monster does +1 damage to your character for each undone task. If the monster knocks your character unconscious, you may not attack the monster until you regain at least one point of health.
  • If there are left over stat points after a monster is defeated that have not been used, add them to the character sheet to be used against the next monster.
  • Use the HP bar on the monster’s card to mark progress, coloring in damage as you go. This way you can watch the monster weaken day by day.
  • When the monster’s HP hits zero, your child has conquered it! Give them the corresponding Reward Item Card. These items are unique, collectible treasures like the Gem of Momentum or the Helm of Resolve.
  • Add the monster to your defeated monster list on your character sheet.

Hero’s Medal

Once a child has leveled high enough to battle the Accountability Dragon and win, they reach Level 20 and can be given the Hero’s Medal. This marks the end of their epic quest, showing they have not only completed their tasks and defeated every monster but also proven themselves consistent, honest, and responsible along the way. The Hero’s Medal is more than a game reward—it’s a symbol of the real growth they’ve achieved by practicing accountability day after day. Parents can celebrate this milestone with a special ceremony, reminding their child that the skills they’ve gained—persistence, diligence, and integrity—are treasures they will carry long after the game is done.
